17 locks, 18 miles, around 10 hours

Used as an “out and back” cruise from Great Haywood this is truly memorable. It is accessed by cruising north up the Trent & Mersey then turning right at Etruria into a staircase lock.

Don’t be put off by the number of locks – the effort is well worthwhile, as the Caldon boasts some of the most beautiful scenery and dramatic views of any canal on the network.

Please note that your boat will not pass under Froghall Tunnel. But there is a winding hole just before the tunnel.

Some of the many attractions:

  • Froghall – hop on a local bus to Alton Towers
  • Cheddleton – a working flint mill with museum status
  • Cheddleton – Churnett Valley Railway

From Great Haywood a return trip to the Caldon is a leisurely week with plenty of time for sightseeing.
